ICoTA Europe Lunch and Learn - Subsea Water Shut-Off presented by BP

February 27th 2018

From 11:45 for 12:00, ends by 13:30

Venue: Aker Solutions, Aberdeen International Business Park, Dyce

ICoTA facilitates connections and shares knowledge across all well intervention disciplines.

The topic of this lunch and learn will be Subsea Water Shut-Off presented by BP.  Darren Paul, Shell, will Chair the Lunch.

High water cut in wells can have significant adverse effects on production, as well as safety implications (in increased H2S). Whilst water shut off may seem like an obvious solution, on subsea wells where intervention costs are high and there is often limited surveillance data, it can be difficult to justify the expense without confidence of a sizeable uplift being delivered.

This presentation by BP will discuss a water shut off carried out on the subsea tie-back well Kinnoull K2, detailing how the business case was built and then how the intervention was delivered. Whilst the operation grew from a simple production log and plug set, to an operation requiring two separate interventions, milling operations, fishing stuck toolstrings and other challenges, the intervention successfully delivered the expected production.

The presentation will then consider some of the factors that helped to make this a successful water shut off candidate, and discuss some of the challenges faced in progressing further subsea water shut-offs, including building the business case and executing water shut-offs in sand control completions without annular barriers to flow.

Whilst presenting some of the potential solutions to these challenges, the presenter aims to open up the discussion to the audience to discuss how collectively some of the challenges in subsea wells can be met to unlock further water shut-offs in the North Sea.
