ICoTA Europe Lunch and Learn - Understanding Multi-Finger Caliper Accuracy & Precision - presented by Altus Intervention

March 27th 2018

From 11:45 for 12:00, ends by 13:30

Venue: Aberdeen Football Club, Pittodrie Stadium, Pittodrie Street, Aberdeen AB24 5QH

ICoTA facilitates connections and shares knowledge across all well intervention disciplines.

Multi-finger caliper (MFC) surveys are commonly perceived as a ‘commodity’ service in the sense that they are widely available, use the same tools, and often the same processing software irrespective of the service provider.  Allied to this perception is perhaps a lack of understanding of all the factors that contribute to the accuracy and precision of (MFC) surveys.

The accuracy and precision of MFC surveys in tubing and casing are important for the quantitative assessment of:

  • Maximum penetration & maximum wall loss due to corrosion and/or wear

  • Scale build-up, and the effectiveness of scale-milling

  • Dimensions of pipe in a new well (‘baseline’ survey)

  • Condition of downhole equipment

  • Pipe deformation

  • Time-lapse monitoring of the above from caliper logs acquired over months or years, in some cases with different tools, engineers and service companies

The presentation will describe the factors (including pipe size, tool design, maintenance & calibration, log-acquisition practices & post-processing) that affect accuracy and precision, drawing on lots of real data acquired over the past few years.

As an example, what might account for differences in the measured maximum penetration of a corrosion pit in 7” pipe from surveys acquired 32 days apart?

Answers to this and other case studies will be provided.

Agenda is as follows:
