February Lunch and Learn - Retrospectively building a well construction diagram when the data is missing – planning a subsea well abandonment campaign’

From 11:45 for 12:00, ends by 13:45

Venue: Aker Solutions, Aberdeen International Business Park, Dyce

Presented by TGT Oilfield Services

A number of subsea wells in the UK North Sea required an optimum process for the permanent plugging and abandonment, which included a campaign of downhole data gathering and safe suspension of selected wells using a Light Well Intervention vessel (LWI) prior to the arrival of a mobile drilling unit. The criticality of this phase of the operation was to enter already shut-in wells, and to establish access to wells which had not been accessed or worked over for over 20 years. Limited data was available for the condition of the casings and completions. It is to be noted that in this phase of the operation the tubing needed to remain in place and was not be retrieved, as the retrieval of the tubing would require a drilling rig.

In order to update the well barriers condition a number of downhole logging solutions were utilized which included the following steps:

  1. Location of all downhole completion jewellery
  2. Determining the tubing integrity in the area of scale build up
  3. Internal and external primary metal barrier characterization
  4. Casings integrity assessment through tubing
  5. Adjusting critical pressure levels (MAWOP & MAASP) and positive/negative pressure testing of downhole jewellery (Casing, packer etc)
  6. Location of integrity issues if identified during the pressure test

Once the well envelope and barriers were successfully tested in accordance to established industry criteria and completion diagrams are updated the wells could be safely suspended for further plug and abandonment operation.

This Lunch and Learn will describe each operational step highlighting the challenges and solutions.
