Techbyte Spotlight: Sonardyne

Stephen Auld

Sonardyne will soon be presenting a techbyte session at the SPE ICoTA 24th Well Intervention Conference on the company's ROV portable wireless technologies. Stephen Auld, Global Business Manager, Asset Monitoring (pictured), explains more:

The driving force

"Through many advances in underwater ROV technologies, field service companies wished to ensure that they could not only position and communicate with their ROVs wirelessly, but also use them to harvest data acoustically from wellbore data loggers. As Sonardyne has been at the forefront of wireless positioning and ROV-to-surface acoustic telemetry, it was a logical extension to extend that capability to allow wireless data harvesting using an ROV.
"Our BlueComm optical modem range, which can be used to wirelessly transfer data from subsea instruments to an ROV, or other subsea vehicles, at extremely fast uploading speeds subsea, making high-rate data harvesting possible."

What attendees will learn

"Infrastructure comes at a cost – there are tools that you can use that mean you don’t need that infrastructure. Wellbore data can be monitored and saved at the wellhead without the need of an umbilical. Acoustic data loggers mounted on, or close to, the wellhead, can do the same job wirelessly, using acoustic transceivers from a surface vessel, an ROV, a moored buoy or even unmanned surface vessels. This is the future.

"The ICoTA conference brings together an audience that spans reservoir engineering through to completions, from both the operator and contractor communities. From an equipment supplier perspective, this is an ideal audience to present the latest acoustic, through-water, wireless communication techniques that will help operators more efficiently develop new fields, prolong the life of older assets and more cost effectively abandon exhausted assets."
