Teddy Mulenga, Subsea Wells Engineer at bp won the ICoTA Future of Excellence Energy Award in 2025 and received a cheque from ICoTA Europe for £1994, signifying the year that ICoTA was established.
Since joining BP's graduate scheme in 2021, Teddy has demonstrated exceptional technical capability across drilling, interventions, and carbon capture roles. His award-winning work centred on a pioneering subsea operation that replaced traditional diesel powerpacks with electric units—a platform first designed to significantly reduce carbon emissions.
The project presented complex challenges, including a stuck toolstring in a sliding sleeve that required innovative problem-solving under pressure. Through rigorous technical analysis and effective vendor collaboration, Teddy successfully navigated compression forces at depth to recover the fishing string, while also revising emergency response procedures to support this groundbreaking approach.
Teddy's work exemplifies the kind of forward-thinking engineering that will drive our industry's future. Speaking after his win, Teddy commented: “I really didn’t expect to win. This was my last job as an intervention engineer and the most difficult and I wanted to leave on a high. I learnt so much and overcame a lot of unexpected difficulties. Winning this Award has given me a huge confidence boost!”
