Announcing the Finalists: Future of Energy Excellence Award

We are proud to announce the shortlisted candidates for this year's Future of Energy Excellence Award. These exceptional young professionals represent the next generation of talent driving innovation and excellence in the well intervention industry.

Each finalist will present a significant intervention project they've been involved in on 28th October at the Chester Hotel, Aberdeen, showcasing the technical challenges, creative solutions, and measurable outcomes that are shaping the future of our industry.

Meet the 2025 Finalists!

Matthew Powell – Welltec, Client Solutions Advisor

Matthew brings over a decade of energy sector experience to his role at Welltec, specialising in innovative well intervention solutions. His presentation will detail a complex North Sea operation where a failed Downhole Safety Valve (DHSV) threatened to leave the lower completion isolated.Working with the client, Matthew's team developed a bespoke solution using two newly developed technologies: the Welltec ShiftLoK and the Wellgrab Hi-Range Overshot with Claw. The project required precise system integration testing and flawless offshore execution to restore well control and extend well life—all while delivering a cost-effective alternative to traditional workovers or milling.

Teddy Mulenga – BP, Subsea Wells Engineer

Teddy joined BP's graduate scheme in 2021 and has progressed through drilling and interventions roles before moving to his current position in carbon capture. His presentation focuses on a groundbreaking PLT and WSO operation that replaced diesel powerpacks with electric units—a platform first aimed at reducing carbon emissions. The intervention presented multiple technical challenges, including a stuck toolstring in a sliding sleeve and the need to revise emergency response procedures. Through calculated problem-solving and vendor collaboration, Teddy successfully recovered the fishing string by accounting for compression forces at depth, demonstrating the critical importance of technical analysis under pressure.

Irakli Tsikarishvili – Halliburton, Associate Engineer,Production Solutions

Born in Georgia and educated in the UK, Irakli joined Halliburton with a mission to tackle climate change through innovative energy solutions. His presentation covers a nitrogen injection and acid stimulation operation for a CCS appraisal well in the Southern North Sea. When unexpectedly low reservoir injectivity challenged the initial plan, Irakli collaborated with the customer to rapidly redesign the intervention, integrating acid stimulation to improve formation permeability. The successful operation enabled over 1.5million scf of nitrogen to be injected, directly supporting the development of carbon capture and storage infrastructure.

Shannon Holt – BP, Interventions Engineer

Shannon graduated from Heriot-Watt University in 2020 andhas built diverse experience across wireline, coiled tubing, and subsea operations in the North Sea. Her presentation details the installation of TAQA's PulseEight Intelligent Safety Valve (ISV) on Marnock W109—BP's first ISV deployment on a platform well. The project navigated significant challenges including well instability, limited downhole data, hydrate risks, and a narrow 5-bar pressure window. Through innovative problem-solving and cross-functional collaboration, Shannon's team successfully deployed the ISV while reducing setting depth and improving long-term equipment operability—all with zero HSE incidents.

Supporting the Next Generation

These presentations offer valuable insights into real-world problem-solving, the deployment of cutting-edge technologies, and the collaborative approaches that are essential to modern well intervention. From carbon capture initiatives to barrier element restoration, these projects demonstrate how young professionals are actively shaping a more efficient and sustainable energy future.

Join us in celebrating these finalists as they share their experiences and contribute to the collective knowledge of our industry!
