Meet Kellie Karimi, Junior Chair of the Technical Committee and Senior Intervention Engineer at bp

Tell us your name, company and current role outwithicota?
Kellie Karimi, senior intervention engineer, bp and Jnr Chair Technical committee
How did you get into the coiled tubing/well intervention industry?
Started in drilling in 2014. A labour government got rid of exploration drilling so the clear choice was a jump to interventions! I've been in interventions 8 years now and wouldn't change a thing. I love the challenge of not knowing. Trying to solve what tools are available and how we could make them work for the issue we are seeing. I also enjoy that we work across the upstream value chain, integrating with the asset and building a network of people to tackle our brownfield issues.
What does your role on the ICoTA Committee involve?
I've been in both the conference committee and the technical committee. My role often involves getting people together to discuss new ideas and technology. I thoroughly enjoy the networking part of it and finding out about new technologies before anybody else!
Why did you get involved with ICoTA? What made you decide to give up personal time?
I wanted to expand my interventions network. I was new to Aberdeen and previously having involvement with SPE in Asia Pacific, ICOTA aligned with my current career plan. While it make take up some of my time, I see it incredibly beneficial to my professional career.
What's the most exciting things happening in the CT and interventions space right now - where do you see the industry heading?
The shear amount of new technologies. I feel in the last 2 -3 years technology has taken a huge leap forward, both in terms of the boundaries (pressure/temperature) but also what we can do on wireline which was typically done on coil or drill pipe.
What's the one thing you wish you'd known earlier in yourcareer? Any advice for someone just starting out?
Be patient; easier said than done. Interventions can be a very fast moving and reactive environment. You will learn a lot, and quickly(none of this 2+ year planning business like they do in drilling andcompletions). So while you may feel like you've learnt a lot, when it comes to climbing the corporate ladder, be patient.
What's your favourite thing about the ICoTA community?
The people.
Outside of work, what are you passionate about? Hobbies, interests, hidden talents
Food and travel. I travel mostly to try and eat new food. While the options in Aberdeen are limited, I always try with the events with plan to bring about a new flavour for everyone to enjoy.
